Upcoming Events - March 2008 is Embrace Aging Month June 13, 2008 August 22, 2008
MARCH IS EMBRACE AGING MONTH - EXPLORE THE POSSIBILITIES! When you flip open your calendar to March, it means the Greater Victoria Eldercare Foundation's Embrace Aging Month is here! Now in its third year, Embrace Aging Month is an awareness-building initiative aimed to draw attention to the importance of incorporating art, fitness, education, family, community and wellness as essential parts of a positive, healthy, older life. The Eldercare Foundation's goal is to dispel the social myths and negative perceptions of aging and dying while promoting the many positive services and resources available for older residents in our community. During the month of March, the Eldercare Foundation, with the support of the Province of British Columbia, encourages the entire community to learn about the resources available to help embrace the journey of aging. "The Province is pleased to support the work of the Greater Victoria Eldercare Foundation, during this important awareness month," said Ida Chong, Minister of Commmunity Services and Minister Responsible for Seniors' and Women's issues. "We applaud the Foundation's work in raising awareness about services for seniors and the importance of older citizens remaining active and involved in our communities." Lori McLeod, Executive Director Eldercare Foundation notes,"Embrace Aging Month is a vehicle to encourage seniors and their families to explore what their community has to offer." She adds, "There is a wealth of resources and activities available in the Capital region and we hope that by shining a light on them during the month of March, seniors will be inspired to make connections that will support them year-round." Embrace Aging Month is an initiative of the Greater Victoria Eldercare Foundation aimed to inform and inspire through awareness and promotion. However, we couldn't do it without all the wonderful people who step forward to host, organize and sponsor the events that take place during March in celebration of Embrace Aging Month. We appreciate the initiative of the various community groups and businesses that host special senior-focused events during this month like Senior Living Magazine's Senior Celebration Festival and VIHA's Yakimovich Wellness Centre Workshops. Thank you to all the groups, organizations and senior-focused businesses who are highlighting services, sharing information and opening doors in recognition of Embrace Aging Month. We would also like to acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia through the Ministry of Community Services, which has enabled the Eldercare Foundation to promote Embrace Aging Month. Mark your calendars and be sure to attend some of the special events being hosted in celebration of Embrace Aging Month including: Senior Celebration Festival Meet amazing inspirational seniors and connect to senior resources at this day-long, interactive Festival. Hope to see you again next year! BC WINE AND OYSTER FEST 13
Another Success in Support of Eldercare The sun popped out of the clouds just in time for the start of the 13th Annual BC Wine and Oyster Fest. This year there were more wineries than ever participating allowing our guests to sample over 100 of BC best wines. BC beer, oysters, chocolate fondue and other tasty treats were also on offer as guests roamed the patios and lower causeway at the Coast Victoria Harbourside Hotel and Marina on June 22nd . Thanks to everyone who participated, volunteered, sponsored and attended over $10,000 was raised in support of the Foundation's mission to provide enhanced care and comfort for our elderly residents.
