About the Foundation
The Greater Victoria Eldercare Foundation enhances the care, comfort and dignity of elderly persons living in our community. We accomplish this by raising funds for equipment, home-like enhancement, community support, research and education. The Foundation directly supports the residents of the Aberdeen, Mt. Tolmie, Glengarry, Priory, Heritage Woods and Oak Bay Lodge long-term care facilities and generally supports the care of elderly persons living in Greater Victoria. The Foundation also supports community programs for seniors such as the West Shore and Oak Bay Lodge Adult Day Programs, the Mobile Adult Day Program, the Community Bathing Program, the Yakimovich Wellness Centre, the Piercy Respite Hotel and the Hillside Seniors Health Centre. The Foundation is not government funded. We rely on donations from individuals, business and service clubs and proceeds raised through special events like this. Since 1982, the Foundation has donated almost $6 million to support care for the elderly.
Proudly Supported by:

AGM 2008/2009
Annual General Meeting 2008/2009 Board of Directors Report
Over this past year, the Board has continued to steer and grow the Foundation towards its goal of being the leading Foundation for care of the elderly. It is because of the outstanding dedication and support from the Foundation's Membership and our generous donors that we have enjoyed another year of success and progress towards this goal. Here are a few highlights of our activities:
Fundraising Campaigns:
On October 28, 2008, we celebrated the completion of our Comfort Care Campaign. The $700,000 fundraising goal was met and funds were allocated to upgrade care facilities, replace aging equipment and provide support for valuable community programs for seniors and their family caregivers.
The Foundation launched a new $800,000 fundraising campaign at the end of October 2008. Our 3 R's Campaign builds on the success of our previous campaign and is aimed to:
Reach Out into the community to support valuable programs and education. Our fundraising efforts will help to enhance programming at the Piercy Respite Hotel, the West Shore Adult Day Centre, the Oak Bay Lodge Adult Day Centre, the Mobile Adult Day Program, and the Community Bathing Program. We also reach out to community through our Embrace Aging Month initiative and through the free education we support at the Yakimovich Wellness Centre to help seniors and their families navigate the journey of aging.
Respect our Elders by providing a legacy to care for them well into the future. As part of our 3 R's campaign, we are working to build an endowment and legacy fund that will forever provide important care and programs for our valued elders.
Renew aging care facilities and equipment. Always a staple in our fundraising campaigns, the need to upgrade the care facilities we support and replace aging equipment remains a priority. The 3 R's Campaign will build on our Comfort Care Campaign successes through continued upgrading of bathing rooms, garden and visiting spaces, palliative care rooms and replacement of much-needed equipment.
Grants to Enhance Quality of
Life for the Elderly Total Almost $5.9 Million:
In fiscal 2008/2009, the Foundation was able to grant almost $350,000 to enhance quality of life for our community's elders. Since our inception in 1982, the Eldercare Foundation has donated almost $5.9 million in support for our community's seniors and their valued caregivers.
Oak Bay Lodge - It's Official:
As reported at the December 2008 AGM, Oak Bay Lodge officially came under the Eldercare umbrella in July 2008. We actively included Oak Bay Lodge in our fundraising efforts this past fiscal year and have received terrific support from their staff, residents, families and volunteers. They are a wonderful addition to our Eldercare family.
Education and Research:
One of our Foundation's strategic goals is to provide support for research into the health of older persons and to provide educational opportunities for care giving staff. Through our education bursaries and awards, this past fiscal year we have provided just over $13,000 in grants to support continued education for care giving staff. These awards and bursaries fund attendance at post-secondary institutions, professional conferences and opportunities for learning at the sites we support.
We received a research grant to assist with VIHA's 'Seniors At Risk Integrated Network' initiative. Through this grant, a health education needs assessment was conducted throughout Greater Victoria. Results of this research were presented in November 2008 and have provided valuable information regarding the gaps and overlaps in available education for seniors at risk. The research is currently being used by the Vancouver Island Health Authority to develop community partnerships and programs to address the identified gaps. This research also provides our Foundation with valuable insight into future needs and fundraising priorities for our community's aging population.
New Health Arts Program:
Thanks to the generous support of our donors, the Foundation was able to introduce an exciting new program to the residents at Glengarry, Aberdeen, Mt. Tolmie, Priory/Heritage Woods, and Oak Bay Lodge. The ArtsWay program, operated by the Health Arts Society, provides a live professional performance art event at each site monthly. Although the work is therapeutic, it does not have the same objectives as music therapy. It is directed to the normalization and enrichment of life. The events are interactive and the level of professionalism enhances the experience as evidenced by the glowing testimonials we have received from residents, family members and staff. As a special thank you to the Eldercare Foundation and as a special treat for our residents, the Health Arts Society mounted a spectacular circus performance on August 18th, 2009. Held at the Gorge Hospital on their beautiful waterfront grounds, the Tickle Trunk Circus was a real summer treat. A large appreciative crowd of residents, family members, companions, volunteers and staff representing all of our sites, plus our friends from the residential care units at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital and the Gorge Hospital made the trek for this outstanding event.
Conclusion:
This past year has, indeed, been full of wonderful events and activities that have served to raise funds, recognize our supporters, celebrate our successes and bring smiles to the faces of the many special people who call one of the care facilities we support 'home'. Today, Lori will share with you some photos highlighting our activities but before she does, I would like to acknowledge and recognize our Board and Committee members who volunteer countless hours to help further the work of the Foundation. So, to all the members of the Board of Directors, Finance Committee, Communications Committee, Awards Committee, By Laws Committee, Nominations Committee, Legacy Committee, and Special Events Committees, please accept my heartfelt thanks for everything that you do to enrich the lives of the elderly in our community.
I would like to extend a special thanks to Kelly McCauley, who reluctantly resigned as Board President due to his relocation to Edmonton this past year. Also, I would like to acknowledge the exceptional contributions of our departing Board Members, Chuck Loveless, Paul Mantell and Scott Quinney. They are not leaving the fold, simply refocusing their efforts from Board duty to other duties on committees and in advisory roles. On behalf of all of us associated with the Foundation, I would like to thank Lori McLeod, Donald Clark, Marie Peach and Delia Roberts for their dedication and for the extra time they volunteer to enhance our efforts. And last, but certainly not least, I would like to once again say thank you to all our members, donors and supporters. We couldn't do it without you!
Respectfully submitted,
Linda Jones, Volunteer President
Priory's New Auxiliary Walk Opens

Thanks to our donors and a $20,000 grant from the Juan de Fuca Hospitals Auxiliary, the Priory now has a secure walking path linked to 2 upgraded patio gardens. On September 1, 2009 residents, friends, families and staff celebrated at a patio party to offically open this new space. In addition to the new secure walking path, the patio gardens on each end received new furniture, a wheelchair accessible picnic table, new retractable awning, new raised garden beds for therapeutic gardening and lots of colourful new plants and flowers. A special thanks to Knights of Columbus Langford, Royal Canadian Legion Langford, and West Shore Lions who all donated benches for this new garden.

Yakimovich Wellness Centre
Summer BBQ
On August 20, 2009 over 50 regular Yakimovich Wellness Centre attendees joined the Eldercare Foundation for a BBQ and Brainstorm evening. The ideas and insights shared that evening will help us programme the centre with valuable workshops for seniors and their family caregivers throughout the year and has provided us with a great planning tool for March's Embrace Aging Month too!
Circus

Tickle Trunk Circus Provides Miles of Smiles
On August 18, 2009 over 200 residents, their families and friends were treated to a special Tickle Trunk Circus performance. Held on the lawns of the Gorge Hospital, residents from Glengarry, Aberdeen, Mt. Tolmie, Priory, Heritage Woods, Oak Bay Lodge, Saanich Peninsula Hospital and Gorge Hospital enjoyed this special day. The Health Arts Society provided this performance as a special gift to the Eldercare Foundation. The Society delivers professional performance arts events monthly to residents at Glengarry, Aberdeen, Mt. Tolmie, Priory and Oak Bay Lodge thanks to Eldercare's generous donors. A special thanks to VIHA's Residential Therapy/Activity team for their hard work and effort required to make this day a big success. They dressed up in circus costumes and even handed out ice cream!
Lansdowne Patio Garden Opens

Aberdeen's Lansdowne Unit Celebrates
Thanks to our generous donors and a grant from the Norgaard Foundation, Aberdeen's Lansdowne Patio Garden received a complete make-over. On August 11, 2009 residents, friends, family and staff celebrated at a patio garden party to officially open this wonderful garden visiting space. A new UVA/UVB protective shade structure, a wheelchair accessible picnic table and new furniture, a new BBQ, new raised garden beds for the therapeutic gardening program and lots of colourful plants were all part of this patio transformation.
West Shore Adult Day Centre Picnic

Adult Day Programs Provide Friends and Fun
The Eldercare Foundation supports adult day programs in Greater Victoria including the West Shore Adult Day Program, Oak Bay Lodge Adult Day Program and Mobile Day Program (which operates in Cordova Bay, Sooke and Metchosin). Day programs not only provide family caregivers a break, they also provide loved ones a wonderful social connection to their community. On July 15, 2009 the West Shore Adult Day Program, with help from our generous donors, held a summer picnic for their clients, families and friends. The picnic was held at the Veteran's Memorial Park in Langford and brought smiles to young and old alike!

Celebration Concert
Raises Spirits and $15,000!

On April 4, 2009 the Rotary Club of Oak Bay hosted a lively concert to wrap up Embrace Aging Month. The full-house crowd at Alix Goolden Hall was treated to an energetic and uplifting evening of music that even inspired dancing in the aisles. Thanks to our donors, residents from the care facilities Eldercare supports and their family members were able to attend this joyuous evening featuring the Victoria Soul Gospel Choir. Just over $15,000 was raised to benefit the Eldercare Foundation.
Embrace Aging Month
Makes Connections

In March 2009, the Eldercare Foundation celebrated the 4th successful Embrace Aging Month in the Capital Region. A wide variety of events, activities and workshops took place throughout the month helping to raise awareness about the wealth of resources in our community. "Connecting people is key to navigating the journey of aging." said Eldercare's Executive Director Lori McLeod "We are already making plans for March 2010 and hope to inspire more people in our community to get out and explore the possibilities."
CLASSY CADDIES CONVENE
FOR ELDERCARE

Big, Bold and Beautiful it most certainly was! The 6th Annual Classy Caddies at the Fort Show and Shine was held Sunday, July 12th at Fort Rodd Hill & Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Sites. Presented by the Cadillac Club of British Columbia's Vancouver Island Chapter, this year's event attracted 101 big, bold and beautiful Cadillacs and LaSalles.
"Last year saw 89 cadillacs in attendance and our goal this year was to top 100." said Club President Dewane Ollech "We are thrilled with the event's success as net proceeds are going to a very worthwhile cause. The Greater Victoria Eldercare Foundation provides help for our seniors in many different ways, but always with compassion, dignity, and as the name implies, care. Club Members are proud to support the Eldercare Foundation and we'd like to thank everyone who participated, attended and volunteered to make this year's event the best one yet." he added. The field was filled with caddies old and new for this day of competition, camaraderie, food and fun. The Elderly Brothers entertained the crowd with familiar tunes from the '50s and '60s and even got them up dancing. The food concession volunteers were kept hopping as word spread about possibly the best BBQ burgers and fried onions ever!

Heartfelt thanks to all the members of the Vancouver Island Chapter of the Cadillac Club of British Columbia for hosting this classy event in support of the Eldercare Foundation and our community's elders.

A record-breaking 54 wineries were showcased this year allowing our guests to sample over 175 of BC's best wines. We were also treated to samples from 4 BC Breweries and 1 Cider House. The chocolate fountain was a big draw and other tasty treats were also on offer as guests roamed the patios and lower causeway at the Coast Victoria Harbourside Hotel and Marina.
Each year our guests are asked to make note of their favourite red wine, white wine and beer.
