ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
2010/2011
Report of the Finance Committee

by Eduard Mann, Treasurer

AUDITED FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

The audited financial statements of the Greater Victoria Eldercare Foundation for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2011 are attached.

INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO

The financial markets around the world are still very volatile and continue to have a negative impact on investment portfolios. The Finance Committee is very aware of this and continues to maintain due diligence. In May 2010 the Finance Committee, in conjunction with the investment portfolio manager, conducted a review of the portfolio’s asset mix and in particular the amount of US holdings. The Foundation’s annual portfolio review was conducted in October 2011 with members of the Board of Directors, Finance Committee and Foundation staff present.

DONATIONS AND GRANTS

As the Foundation continues with its 3 R’s Campaign we are happy to announce that we have surpassed the 80% mark of our $800,000 goal. As donations are received, funds are spent to meet the granting goals in support of the campaign’s funding priorities.

For fiscal 2010/2011,
the Foundation provided grants totaling
$211,400 as follows:

Equipment - $97,293

The Foundation granted a total of $53,288 in mobility aids for our residents. We were able to provide twelve specialty wheelchairs, one walker and four seating cushions to enhance comfort and increase mobility and independence. Additionally, in conjunction with the Residential Services Therapy Department, the Foundation has established a bariatric equipment pool. With a Foundation grant for equipment kick-started by a $10,000 gift from Thrifty Foods and the Therapy Department’s commitment to create a sharing pool, this pricy Bariatric Equipment can be deployed at any of the sites our elderly residents reside where and when it is most needed. As part of this pool the Foundation purchased two specialty wheelchairs at a total cost of $9,282, two bariatric walkers and nine specialty seating cushions. In addition to the mobility aids in our bariatric pool, the Foundation purchased four bariatric shower commode chairs as well as three bariatric super poles which are used to help residents stand on their own without assistance.

Specialty Mattresses not only provide enhanced comfort but they also provide the added benefit of reducing painful skin ulcers brought on by thinning skin and much time confined to bed. This year the Foundation granted out four specialty mattresses ranging in price from $400 to $14,250 each.

Lift transfer devices are always a priority for the Foundation as they provide extra security and safety for both the residents and the care giving staff that helps them transfer from bed to bath to wheelchair. This year the Foundation purchased a Maximove Lift and a variety of slings for Oak Bay Lodge at a cost of $14,996. The Foundation also purchased slings and slide kits for the Community Bathing Program at the West Shore Adult Day Centre.

As our resident population changes, so do their needs and the way they are cared for. Therapy methods and devices are used extensively now to help our residents and program clients improve their strength, balance, endurance and mobility. This year the Foundation purchased a new type of exerciser called a Medelco Thera-Vital exerciser at a cost of $7,431. The Foundation also purchased a wall hugging lift chair for the Lansdowne Activation Program at the Aberdeen.

Other items purchased for resident use such as new microwave ovens for Mt. Tolmie and Priory and two new refrigerators for Glengarry enable families and volunteers to fix snacks to share with residents during visits. These little home-like enhancements go a long way and afford the residents the simple comforts many of us take for granted.
Through an estate gift, the Foundation received an oxygen concentrator designed to fill small portable oxygen tanks. This valuable piece of equipment allows residents who are dependent on oxygen therapy the freedom to participate in outings in the community.

Gardens - $2,244

As you may recall, over the past couple of years, the Foundation worked to complete major garden enhancement projects at all the sites we support. This year, the Foundation provided grants to keep the visiting gardens looking beautiful and to keep the residents actively working in the therapeutic garden spaces. In addition to plants and garden supplies, we purchased new raised wheelchair accessible planter boxes for the Fairfield Unit at Glengarry. The special design of these planters allows for easy access to enable residents to enjoy the activity of gardening.

Renovations and Furnishings - $15,659

The Foundation purchased big new flat screen TV’s for Birch, Fir, Maple and Dogwood Cottages at Heritage Woods. We also purchased TV’s for the Priory’s main dining room on the Hiscock Unit and for the Staff Education Room at Glengarry. Oak Bay Lodge’s Adult Day program received a big new TV and DVD player too, all thanks to our donors.

The Foundation purchased a new fish tank stand to replace the old stand for the Dogwood Cottage fish tank. The residents love to watch the colourful fish and it often stimulates conversation during visits with family or volunteers. Thanks to our donors, there are fish tanks on all the sites we support providing yet another comfort of ‘home’.

The Foundation purchased a special sound system for the West Shore Adult Day Centre. Elderly clients who find it difficult to participate in group activities due to a hearing impairment can now wear an iPod-like device which individually amplifies the sound for them without intruding on those who do not require amplification. The Foundation partnered with the Priory’s Enhancement Committee to jointly fund the purchase of new furniture for the Hiscock Unit’s visiting areas. The purchase included a couch, four chairs and two end tables. This new furniture has been manufactured to meet VIHA’s new infection control standards.

Through a restricted donation designated specifically to honour and thank staff at Mt. Tolmie, the Foundation purchased $1,074 of new furniture for Mt. Tolmie’s Staff Room.

Resident Comfort, Entertainment
& Program Support Grants - $70,485

Thanks to our wonderful donors and this community’s hard-working service clubs, the Foundation was able to treat residents at all the sites we support to special entertainment, seasonal goodies and celebrations, and special outings and activities in the community throughout the year. Thanks to our friends at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, once again this year, we were able to provide individualized gift bags for residents who otherwise would not receive a gift on Christmas morning.

Music Therapy is a valued and much-appreciated program at all the sites the Foundation supports. With the exception of Oak Bay Lodge, who funds their own Music Therapy Program, 100% of the funding for this program comes from the Foundation’s generous donors. This year we’ve even been able to provide additional music therapy sessions at some sites thanks to resident family members who have witnessed the tremendous value first hand through their loved ones’ participation.

Professional world-class entertainment is something that many of our residents enjoyed in their younger days but are now unable venture out to attend a performance in the community. With the support of our donors and a special grant from the Robert & Devi Jawl Foundation, we provided 100% funding to bring the joy of the Arts to the residents right where they live. The Health Arts Society’s popular ArtsWay program takes place monthly at Glengarry, Aberdeen, Mt. Tolmie, Oak Bay Lodge and Priory/Heritage Woods. In August 2010 ArtsWay staged a special circus performance on the lawns of the Gorge Road Hospital. In addition to inviting all our residents, families and volunteers, the Foundation extended an invitation to other care facilities in Greater Victoria including Beckley Farm Lodge and Saanich Peninsula Hospital. The Foundation this year purchased 135 comforters for the residents of Glengarry and Mt. Tolmie and for the Piercy Respite Hotel. Having a cozy bed to sleep in helps ensure a restful night and a warm comforter makes it feel a little closer to home.

The following programs and facilities also received valuable funding support thanks to the generosity of the Eldercare Foundation’s donors: West Shore Adult Day Centre, Mobile Adult Day Program, Oak Bay Lodge Adult Day Program, Community Bathing Program, Piercy Respite Hotel, Yakimovich Wellness Centre, Pastoral Services and Volunteer Services.

Staff Education - $3,743

Staff education continues to be an important part in helping provide the best care for the residents. The Foundation was able to provide funding for care giving staff totalling over $2,900.

Awards & Special Projects - $21,976

The Foundation believes in the importance of funding special project grants and education awards to encourage enhanced care for the elderly both now and well into the future. Awards and Special Project grants this fiscal year included recognizing Camosun College Continuing Care students for excellence in their studies specifically related to care for the elderly; matching grant funding for a research project related to the delivery of bathing programs to the elderly in residential care; and the Seniors Dialogue initiative that has resulted in several senior-led and senior-focused projects to assist older adults during their journey of aging.

CONCLUSION:

As Treasurer and Chair of the Foundation’s Finance Committee, I am fortunate to work with an exceptional team of dedicated volunteers and staff. I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to my fellow Finance Committee members Pat Crofton, Chuck Loveless, George Penwarn, Neil Watson and Nancy Davy. In addition I would like to thank and acknowledge the Foundation’s bookkeeper Marie Peach. The time, effort and attention to detail extended by each of you is paramount to maintaining the trust of our donors. Your stewardship helps to ensure that the people we support through the Foundation’s important work receive maximum benefit from the generosity of our donors.

Respectfully submitted,
Eduard Mann, Treasurer
